The SearchManufacturingERP.com IT Challenge of the Month for December 2011:
My company is implementing a new barcode system on our shop floor and in our warehouses. Is there any pre-existing software – ERP, for example – that we should be integrating this barcode system with? Do we need any other software to ensure that the new barcode system is a success?
Do you have a solution to this challenge? Have you encountered a similar issue at your business? If so, please contact the SearchManufacturingERP.com editors and share your suggestions or experiences.
IT Challenge respondents will receive a free copy of a new book from SAP Press.
And be sure to check back here all this month -- we'll be posting solutions from experts and readers as we receive them.
From industry expert Steve Phillips:
Barcode systems can interact directly with your shop floor or warehouse system or be associated with some form of data collection, depending on the application of the technology. First, data collection software allows for validation of inputs at the source, since data is downloaded from the enterprise system (for example, work order or pick slips). After the associated data is successfully collected, it is sent to the enterprise system for transaction processing. Since the information is initially stored in the data collection system, the advantage is that it allows for continuous operation of the business even if the enterprise system is unavailable for any reason. Once the enterprise system becomes available, the data is uploaded for processing.
