Who should be involved in a manufacturing ERP decision? Is it more of a business decision or more of an IT decision?

A decision of this magnitude needs a business or executive sponsor and an IT sponsor. Business must be involved because software must support business drivers from those that are regulatory (e.g. compliance, safety recalls), growth (e.g. product design, cross-sells, partners), efficiency (e.g. procurement, cost containment), and strategy (e.g. acquisitions, customer satisfaction, divestiture strategies). IT needs to be engaged as the integration of systems, processes and roles require proper planning. Business will push the limits in requirements as that's their role and IT will design for flexibility but communicate the constraints. Ultimately, this is a partnership.
